Everything you need for a stress-free pet-friendly holiday

Plan ahead before you travel 

Before booking your trip, check that your accommodation is suitable for your pet. Some places welcome dogs but not other animals, while others may have restrictions on the number or type of pets allowed. 

It's also worth researching nearby walking routes, pet-friendly attractions, local pet shops and veterinary practices before you travel. If you're heading abroad, make sure you understand the latest pet travel requirements well in advance. 

Pack enough food for the entire trip 

Changing your pet's diet while you're away can sometimes upset their routine, so it's always best to bring enough of their usual food. 

Dogs can continue enjoying Natures Menu Dog Food, while rabbits should have plenty of Selective Rabbit food alongside hay and fresh vegetables. Birds should have sufficient Budgie Food or other species-specific diets, and reptiles should have their usual Tortoise Food or specialist feeds packed before you leave.

Bring familiar feeding equipment 

Keeping meal times as normal as possible helps pets settle into new surroundings. 

Pack your usual Dog Bowls, water bowls and feeding dishes, along with any bottles or feeding equipment your pet uses every day. Familiar items often help reduce stress, particularly during longer stays away from home. 

Pack favourite toys and enrichment 

New environments can be exciting but sometimes overwhelming. 

Bringing familiar toys helps pets feel more relaxed while giving them something enjoyable to do between adventures. 

Dogs may enjoy their favourite Dog Toy, KONG dog toys, Nylabone or Chuckit! Dog Balls, while cats often settle more quickly with familiar Catnip Toys. 

Birds can stay entertained with their favourite Parrot Toy, and small pets benefit from familiar enrichment inside their enclosure. 

Make travelling comfortable 

Whether you're travelling by car, caravan or staying with family, comfort should always come first. 

Dogs and cats will appreciate travelling with their favourite blanket or Dog Beds, while rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals should have secure carriers lined with familiar bedding such as Herbifloor where appropriate. 

Birds should always travel safely inside a secure Bird Cage, while reptiles should remain in suitable transport containers that maintain the correct temperature throughout the journey. 

Stay on top of preventative healthcare 

Holiday destinations often expose pets to unfamiliar environments, making preventative healthcare even more important. 

Before travelling, ensure dogs are up to date with their Flea Treatment and Dog Wormer, and consider using Home Flea Protection products once you return home. 

If your pet requires regular medication or supplements, make sure you pack enough to last the entire trip, with a little extra just in case. 

Don't forget habitat essentials 

If you're taking smaller pets away with you, recreating their normal environment as closely as possible helps reduce stress. 

Bring familiar bedding, hides and Small Animal Houses for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, along with Small Animal Wheels where appropriate. 

For birds, pack favourite perches and toys, while reptiles should have suitable Reptile Substrates or Kagesan Sand Sheets if they'll be staying away for an extended period. 

If you're transporting aquatic pets, ensure filters and essential maintenance products such as Fluval Media are available to keep conditions suitable for your Fluval Fish. 

Prepare for the unexpected 

Even the most carefully planned holidays can bring the occasional surprise. 

Pack a pet first aid kit, any prescribed medication, grooming supplies and emergency contact numbers for your usual vet. It's also worth locating the nearest veterinary practice to your accommodation before you arrive. 

Having everything organised means you can relax knowing you're prepared if anything unexpected happens.
